Where to watch the sunset in Kusadasi?

The marina and the sunset seen from the terrace of Şef Restaurant Kuşadası
The short answer

The best-known sunset spots in Kusadasi are Pigeon Island, the seafront road to the marina, Yılancı Burnu and Ladies Beach; Pamucak is worth the short drive. If you want dinner with the view, raised terraces overlooking the harbour give the widest angle. The sun sets just after 20:30 in late June and around 18:00 in December.

When and where does the sun set in Kuşadası?

“Where can I watch the sunset in Kuşadası?” is one of the first questions visitors ask on their first evening in town. The good news: Kuşadası's harbour faces west, and the sun sinks towards the sea. On a clear evening you can also make out the silhouette of the island of Samos on the horizon.

Sunset times vary quite a bit through the year. In late June the sun sets just after 8:30pm; in December, around 6pm. The point where it sets moves too: further north-west in summer and further south-west in winter, towards Samos. The easiest way to check the exact time for the day you're going is a weather app.

Don't rush off as soon as the sun has set. The sky stays light for about another half hour, and the colours shift from orange to deep navy. In these minutes, which photographers call the “blue hour”, the harbour lights come on and the sea takes on the colour of the sky.

Pigeon Island and the seafront road

Pigeon Island (Güvercinada), the town's emblem, is a small island joined to the shore by a causeway. Its fortress walls and the rocks around it make a striking foreground for sunset photos. It gets busy on summer evenings, so if you want a quiet corner, go early. As the island is right in the town centre, it fits easily into a short walk before dinner.

The seafront road that runs from Pigeon Island to the marina is a good option if you'd like to watch on foot. Strolling along Atatürk Boulevard, you can take in the half hour when the sun changes colour from one vantage point after another. Around Setur Marina, boat masts trace fine lines against the reddening sky.

Yılancı Burnu and Ladies Beach

South of the centre, on the stretch of coast leading to Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Denizi), the headland of Yılancı Burnu is one of the places in town best known for its sunsets. From the headland you can see both the open sea and Pigeon Island, and you can walk there from the centre. Ladies Beach, right next to it, means the beach by day and the sunset by evening. On summer evenings the cafés and restaurants along the shore fill up early. You can also get to Ladies Beach from the centre by dolmuş (shared minibus).

Pamucak, the Dilek Peninsula and watching from the water

North of Kuşadası, on the road to Selçuk, Pamucak and its long sandy beach offer a sunset over a wide-open horizon. It's a good choice if you'd like to watch while walking on the sand, away from the crowds.

To the south, the Dilek Peninsula–Büyük Menderes Delta National Park, entered from Güzelçamlı, is known for its coves. The national park's visiting hours vary with the season. If you're thinking of staying for the sunset, check the entry and exit times in advance.

If you'd like to watch the sunset from the sea, hiring a private boat is another option. Daily boat trips usually return to the harbour in the late afternoon, so if you want to be out at sea when the sun goes down, agree on the return time before you set off.

Choosing a restaurant with a view in Kuşadası

If you want to combine the sunset with dinner, height matters. At a table at shore level, passers-by or parked cars can block the view. From an elevated terrace, on the other hand, the harbour, the boats and the horizon all stay in the same frame. When looking for a sunset restaurant in Kuşadası, pay attention to which way the terrace faces and whether the tables look out to sea. On a west-facing terrace, the sun may shine straight at you in the last half hour, so keep a pair of sunglasses with you.

With its terrace overlooking Kuşadası Marina, Şef Restaurant Kuşadası is about 250 metres from Setur Marina. Its elevated terrace offers a panoramic view of the harbour and the sunset. Open since 2004 and holding a Travellers' Choice badge on Tripadvisor, Şef is one of the best fish restaurants in Kuşadası for anyone who wants to watch the sun go down from the dinner table. The restaurant is open every day from 11am to midnight, and offers valet parking and wheelchair access. You can book your table through the booking form, on WhatsApp or by phone, and find directions on the Contact page.

Sunset in Kuşadası, season by season

When to watch the sunset in Kuşadası matters just as much as where. Each season has its own light and its own crowds:

  • Spring: In April and May the sun sets between 7:30pm and 8:30pm. Evenings are cool, and the air is often clear.
  • Summer: The latest sunsets come in late June and early July. These are the months when the seafront road and Pigeon Island are at their busiest.
  • Autumn: In September, sunset draws in from 7:40pm towards 7pm, and by late October it has dropped to around 6:15pm. The sea is still warm, while the crowds thin out.
  • Winter: The sun sets around 6pm in December and closer to 7pm by late February. After windy days the air is often clearer, and the silhouette of Samos comes into sharp focus.

Tips for not missing the sunset

  • Arrive half an hour early. The colours are often at their most vivid in the half hour before the sun sets and in the minutes just after.
  • Book your table in advance. On summer evenings and at weekends, tables facing the view fill up early. When you book, mention that you'd like a table with a view.
  • Don't be put off by clouds. When the sky has scattered, thin clouds, the colours are often even more vivid. If the horizon is clouded over, though, the sun may disappear before it touches the sea.
  • Bring a light cardigan. On spring and autumn evenings, the breeze off the sea cools things down quickly.
  • Set the exposure for the sky. On a phone, tapping the sky on the screen preserves the colours, and the people in the foreground turn into silhouettes.
  • Time your meal. Start with cold mezes as the sun goes down, then choose your fish from the counter once it's dark.
